The first time we watched this video we were blown away. It's everything we believe in and every bit worth 12 minutes of your life.

I find the very last comment in this video incredibly interesting: the best learning does not happen in isolation but in collaboration. If this is the case, then students should be encouraged to spend more, not less, time learning with their peers.

Laura, we completely agree. The current system does not allow for very much quality peer interaction. Listening to a teacher lecture and then completing an individual assignment would not be classified as peer interaction. The system we are proposing is not merely a digitized system meant to keep students from interacting with their teachers and peers. The point is to have kids work on basic skills such as reading (decoding, comprehension, etc), mental math and other basics at their own pace while freeing up time for teachers to work on real hands-on collaborative experiences with the students in small groups. Those are the kinds of quality collaborative experience our students need to be having.

After re-watching part of the video I also want to add that it is important to have a frequent and accurate assessment of individual student's skills in order to put them in groups where collaboration will actually benefit all the students. Imagine a group where kids are only together because of their age. A few are very advanced in the subject they are working on. Some are average and some are very behind. In this case, most likely the advanced students will always be the leaders and the behind students will feel like they have very little to contribute. If we can mix up the groups, students will get better opportunities to shine in different areas.
